Getting your driver’s license is the ticket to freedom. Once you have it, the world opens up to you, and the open road becomes your playground, as you are deemed capable and responsible enough to operate a vehicle on New Zealand’s roads.
However, to book a full license in Auckland, there are first a few things you need to do.
Get Your Learner’s License
Like many other countries around the world, New Zealand requires that new drivers get a Learner’s License before they can begin operating a vehicle.
To get a Learner’s License, you will need to apply at your local New Zealand Traffic Authority (NZTA) licensing agent. You will have to be over the age of 16, and you’ll need to submit some basic documentation, pay the required fees and take an eye test to qualify. Thereafter, you will be subjected to a written theory test on road traffic rules and basic driving laws.
If you pass this test, you will be issued a Learner’s License, which will allow you to legally operate a vehicle with a supervisor present.
Get Your Restricted License
The next step towards getting your full license is to get a Restricted Driver’s License. Once more, you’ll have to apply at an NZTA licensing agent with the appropriate documentation, pay the required fees and undergo another eye test. Thereafter, a practical test will determine whether you are fit to operate a vehicle with certain restrictions.
These restrictions include not being allowed to operate a vehicle alone between 10 pm and 5 am, as well as being restricted to carrying only very specific kinds of passengers without a supervisor present.
Get Your Full Driver’s License
Once you have a Restricted Driver’s License, you can finally apply for your Full Drivers License. You have to be older than 18 to qualify. If you are under 25 years old, you need to have held your Restricted License for at least 18 months. If you are older than 25, you need to have held your Restricted License for 6 months. If you are over 25 and do defensive driving, you can reduce the wait time to 3 months, and if you are under 25 years of age, this will reduce the wait time to 12 months.
An application at your local NZTA licensing agent, along with the necessary documentation, the appropriate fees, and another eye test, and you’ll be sent off to carry out another practical test.
Once you pass this test, you will finally have a Full Drivers License!
