Here at Thomas Driving School, we offer driving courses in Auckland so that your teenager can enjoy the freedom and liberation of being able to drive themselves around.

By having certain essentials in their car, your teen can be more confident and comfortable on the road, and you can also have peace of mind knowing they are prepared for the unexpected.
Here is a list of the things that your teen should keep in their car at all times while driving in New Zealand:

Emergency Gear

The first and most important item is a set of jumper cables. Car batteries can die without warning, so having a set of cables on hand can prevent your teen from being stranded on the side of the road.
It’s also a good idea to have a small amount of emergency cash, a flashlight, a blanket, water bottles, energy bars, a multitool or knife, gloves, extra batteries, duct tape, hand sanitiser and a first-aid kit in the car. If there is enough room in the trunk, you can also include an empty petrol can for unexpected situations.

Your teen should also have a car jack and associated tools in the trunk, and know how to change a tire in case of a flat.

Medical Information

In the event of an accident or emergency, your teen’s emergency medical information should be easily accessible. This information should be kept in both their wallet and in the glovebox. This way, emergency personnel can quickly find the information they need in case of an emergency.

Necessary Documentation

Third-party insurance is recommended for all drivers in New Zealand, even though it’s not compulsory. Regardless, your teen should always keep proof of their insurance in the car. Additionally, they should keep their driver’s license and vehicle registration papers in the car at all times in case they get pulled over or are involved in an accident.

What To Do If There Is An Accident

In the event of an accident, it’s important to know what to do. You can make or download a checklist that your teen can keep in the glovebox. This checklist will walk them through the most important things to do while on the scene of an accident and what to do once they have left.

Car Charger

Your teen should always have a car charger with them to keep their phone charged while on the road. It’s also a good idea for them to have a GPS app like Google Maps installed and operational at all times, so they can never get lost and so you can always keep track of their location if needed.

A Roadmap

Finally, your teen should have a roadmap in the car in case their smartphone dies or if they are traveling to an unfamiliar area. A pen and paper should also be kept in the car for writing down directions or taking notes.
